Navigating through the world after dark can be a disorienting experience. During the day it is easy to become immune to the subtle nuances of the community where one resides. Streets, houses, and vegetation slowly merge into a unified visual code for “neighborhood” or “home.” However, under the strange and often eerie cast of electric lights, the same scene can take on a range of alternate meanings. I am most interested in the nocturnal transformation of plant life that looms just outside the comfort of our homes. Photographing at night ensures both a certain amount of distillation of visible data and a new view of the familiar. This process allows me to focus my attention on what I find to be the strange and fragile intersection between our lives and the ultimately uncontrollable forces of nature.
